159960: Extreme steeeing wheel vibration/wobble (17-09-2018 21:29:28)

ENG: Hi guys!

Im looling for a LR doctor in Sydjylland/Vejle area.

After hitting a bump on my LR Defender 90 (1997) on the foresty road Im getting an extreme steering wheel vibration at speeds around 50-60 km/h.

Hope it’s just wheel balance / tyre tread gone bad shape, thats all it is, but could be something deeper (had a slight play in the steering for a while now).

Any suggestion for a local (Vejle-Grindsted) expert who knows Defenders? I can only limp 50 km/h for now..

Thanks all in advance!

Cheers.

Sounds like panhard-rod bushes...

Easy to diagnose if you have someone that can help you holding the steering wheel. Have the assistant pulling the steering wheel right and left (within the play area) while you light under the vehicle and look for play in the bushings...

All best,

Christian

Thanks a ton, Christian

Ill give it a try, I guess i still would need a hydraultic press to press old bushings our and press the new one in. Unless.. I get a whole new Panhard-rod with the bushings already pressed (;

In any case, if anyone knows someone in the area who specializes on Defenders kindly let me know!

Cheers.

Could be anything. Best thing to do under any circumstance is to take it to
a qualified mechanic. If the problem came after hitting a bumb, you might have bended a steering or track rod. Any deasent garage should be able to align the steering and rebalance the wheels if neccersary.

Maybe a local member of this club can help you out?

Otherwise I would take it to the local garage and talk to them.

Regards
Niels

Thanks Verner and Kenneth,

I wish it was something simple, but given the history of steering wheel slight play, it must be caused by slack or looseness somewhere in the steering system/rods, changing bushings and balancing the wheels would not be a bad thing to try.

Cheers.

Big big thanks to all!

I’ll check the tires, but I’m mentally prepared to go all the way, check for wear and replace if needed: panhard rod bushings, wheel bearings, swivel ball preload, radius arm bushings, steering tie rod ends, etc. etc.

It seems like mud or a tire went bad or just a wheel out of balance could be the reason that kicks off that violent vibration, but it’s main cause must be worn out or dameged components somewhere..

Cheers.

Is there a suspectet wheel, then rise it from the ground with a jack (if you got one) then grab the wheel upmost and downmost and test if there are some slack, if not, start the engine af aply a Low gear and see if the wheel/tire runs even or there are an odd sound.

Thank you all for the help, I’ve ordered some genuine LR bushings (there is a lot of play at the rod ends), let’s see if that helps..

The wheels themselves seem alright / solid.

Cheers.

Great to hear that you hopefully found the issue!

(And also glad to hear my remote diagnostic skills are not that much off)

Cheers,
