Dear friends

I just arrived in the beatiful country of Denmark from Iceland were I live on my Land Rover 90 2,5 diesel turbo 1988. The diesel pipe for cylinder 4 broke down after I arrived but I was still able to drive on 3 cylinders since this was on last Sunday. But then when I was in Hjörring on North Jutland it almost finally broke down and I stopped it outside Hjörring Bilcenter. I have got the spare part for the 4 cylinder and the engine runs but very badly it had a lot of black smoke but now it has a lot of white smoke. Propably not running on all cylinders and I fear the pistons or valves have been damaged. The guys at Hjorring Bilcenter are going to take a look at it tomorrow and give me feedback but all your help is really appreciated.

Is there someone in the Hjorring area that knows this enginge that would be able to take a look? If needed we would just tow the vechile to the right destination.

If it is a major damage do you think an engine shift would be cheaper, faster and more reliable? Were, for how long and for how much would I expect there?

I have a 90" 2,5 TD myself but since I am in the other end of the country I will not come around to have a look.

The engine is rather hard to kill, so don't expect the worst just because of some smoke ;-)

What exactly broke? The stiff pipe between injector and the high pressure pump or the injector itself? How do you know? Did it split and spat diesel all over the place?

I would strongly suggest that you contact Keld Nielsen at Tohuse Auto (tel.+45 86 66 80 87) as Henrik wrote. He is a very skilled mechanic, and his prices are very resonable. Keld recently replaced the headgasket in my TD, and it is a job well done at a good price.

Thank you all for the great feedback.

The news are in. The guys at Hjornin Bilcenter did a compression test an cylinder 4 is completly dead and cylinder 3 almost as well. Because of this they have doomed the engine caput.

So I propably only have the option to get a new engine, propably a 200tdi or a 300tdi. Do you know were I could find such an engine and could the guys you mentioned help me get it in the car in a reasonable time and cost?

Hi Again.

To me that sounds rather rediculous! How would they know the overall state of the engine with only a compressiontest? Do yourself a big favour and try calling Tohuse Auto for a second opinion! To me the symptoms of white smoke, low or no compression sounds like a failed headgasket, and is a rather standard fault on the 2.5TD. I have tried it twice now, and a new headgasket costs around 300 DKK and would take about half a day to replace if nothing else is wrong with the engine.

To me it sounds like the guys in Hjørring have only little or no knowledge about your engine!

Regarding the question of a 200 or 300 TDI, you would have to look very long and hard to find one at the danish market since they are very popular motors for older defenders. And with the 300 TDI you have to find a new gearbox as well.

I really, really hope that you take a second advice, as it could spare you a vast amount of money if it is only a headgasketfailure!

I have called Keld at Tohuse and gotten some great feedback. Im going down to Hjorring bilcenter to let them take of the head and look at the gasket. Lets hope its not greater than that.

Then I will have engine power and time to maybe drive to England to get a new engine there :) Lets see.

I hope you find that it is only the gasket that causes you the problem. Have them install a reinforced Elring-headgasket instead of one of the cheap ones from China. It will be well worth the money.

In case you need spares, I recommend:

Please note that it is not nessecary to change the headbolts on your engine. They are rather expensive, and sometimes unexperienced LR-mechanichs have a rather hard time believing that you can re-use them ;-)

Hi again

After consulting from Keld at Tohuse the guys at Hjorring Bilcenter are currently replacing the head gasket which was seriously broken. They aim to complete it this afternoon so we can be back up and running. Im just hoping that there is nothing else wrong with the engine.

I just wanted to inform you I got my Land Rover back on Friday after the headgasket had been replaced. Luckily it was the only problem and the engine is running as new.
