Land Rover have issued a Technical Bulletin to dealers relating to the widely reported problem of the Driveshaft battering the sump in the new 'Puma' Defenders.

It didn't take long for reports to start appearing on various forums from owners of the new Puma powered Defenders complaining that the driveshaft was hitting the engine oil sump while offroading. So far all the reports seen by LRO have involved LEFT HAND DRIVE vehicles only.

Land Rover seem to have finally acknowledged the problem with a Technical Bulletin sent to dealers. This is a long way short of a full recall and nothing will be done by your dealer unless you complain about banging noises underneath.

The problem is being rectified by fitting a modified sump pan (part no LR007598)

The full bulletin states:

"Customers may report a noise from the underside of the vehicle when driving off road.
Investigation shows witness marks on the engine oil pan adjacent to the driveshaft. This
may occur when the axle articulation is at its most extreme under compound input
movement conditions.

Cause: The tolerance variation under extreme articulation can allow the two items to
come into

Action: A modified engine oil pan with improved clearance for extreme articulation
between the driveshaft and the pan has been introduced."

Nobody is perfect - nu kommer det bare an på, om producenten vil vedstå sig ansvaret om et par år, når de firste af den siodste model er kommet i brugtbilshandlen. Ingen køber vil kunne gå ud fra, at han bør oplyse til sælger, hvor ekstrem terrænkørsel bilen vil blive udsat for.
En frivillig tilbagekaldelsesaktion ville klæde producentens ansvarsimage!

Ikke lige nogen tillidvækkende nyhed, men der er trods alt godt at det bliver gjort kendt, inden en står der – langt fanden-i-vold inde i et spor – med en rævne i sumpen.

Jeg går ud ifra at Land Rover Danmark henvender sig, og tilbyder en udbedring. Er der nogen af jer, andre Puma ejere, der har hørt noget fra Land Rover – eller som selv har taget kontakt?

Puma er navnet på "de nye" maskineri i Defender. Som det kan læses på www.wikipedia.org:

Duratorq is the marketing name of a range of Ford diesel engines first introduced in 2000 for the Ford Mondeo range of cars. The first design, codenamed "Puma" during its development replaced the older Endura unit which had been around since 1984. Commercial versions of the Puma unit replaced Ford's older "York" type unit used in the Transit, and many other manufacturers' vehicles - most notably the London Taxi.

Other, unrelated units in this range have been developed in conjunction with Peugeot[1]. These engines are therefore available in Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo and Mazda vehicles. They are given different names by PSA Peugeot Citroën (PSA).
